My News Summary

Hey Team! Have you ever heard of a little village in Russia called "Shoyna"? It's my first time to explore about it so I thought it was worth mentioning this to all of you. You already know I love the New York Times and obviously, I discovered an article about it written by Sergey Ponomarev.

The village is located here:

What really interested me was the fact that the buildings are completely buried under sand. According to the writer, it used to be a port for fishing and the population relied heavily on this production. Unfortunately, over-fishing caused depletion of local stock and a damaged eco-system. You could call it a man-made disaster as fishing had disrupted the seabeds and seaweeds. There are certain plants required to stop the sand from coming ashore, but Shoyna had failed to prepare for worst case scenarios. Currently, the population is dropping, there are less job opportunities and their necessities are double the price than other Russian cities. Imagine a life without quality fresh foods and constantly checking if your house is safe! Moreover, their only source of transport to travel to other cities is the helicopter. Quite a tough life for these people.

Here are some other photos of the village:

My question: The consequences of a man-made disaster is very, very serious. Many families had to leave their homes in Shoyna and saw their homes getting swallowed by the sand. Do you think money and greed is the root of many environmental disasters? Explain your answer!

  3. Nice article. Judy Lee.

In my opinion, both are consequences of the lack knowledge that the population have. If they have the consequences of their acts, I dare they won't continue harm our environment.

  5. Throughout the history, humans always have destroyed beautiful nature for their greed. Maybe we'd better to think about nature more.

  6. Sometimes human don't think of the future because they only thinking about short-term profits. It is the cause of a man-made disaster but we cannot solve it by ourselves. Therefore, I think human desires destroy the enviroment.
